Welcome to Your Smart Classroom!
The Smart protocol for classroom technology is designed to make using computer, video, CD, and DVD playing as easy as possible. Please, do not hesitate to address questions about the Smart classrooms to Library & Information Services. We can be contacted via E-mail (helpdesk@dickinson.edu), telephone (x1000), or by visiting the Help Desk on the lower level of the Waidner-Spahr Library..

Basic instructions
The MediaLink controller on the front of the podium should be used to turn the projector on and off, select input sources, and set volume. Please DO NOT use the projector remote control for these functions. You can also blank the image with the "pic mute" button and the sound with the "audio mute" button. Please note that in the event buttons are pressed with the projector off or the DVD/VCR mode is changed not using the MediaLink, the controller may "get out of sync" with the actual conditions. In most cases it is only necessary to press the appropriate button again on the MediaLink (even if it is already illuminated) to restore function.

To turn the projector On or OFF
Use the Display ON and OFF buttons on the MediaLink. The projector takes 30 seconds to warm up (The button will flash while the projector is warming up or cooling down. Please do not press other buttons during this time).

To view the built-in Mac
With the projector on, press the PC button on the MediaLink. The computer is a Mac "mini" located below the DVD/VCR on the front of the podium. If not already on, press the black power button located to the right of the computer to turn it on. You may also need to press the power button located on the front of the Smart podium to turn that on, especially if the computer has been "sleeping". The slot to insert a DVD or CD is located to the left side of the computer. Use the eject button on the keyboard to eject your disc. The computer can be booted into either Mac OS or Windows, to change hold down the option key as you restart the computer. Note: the computer sound is via the HDMI connection, if you have no sound check that the sound output device is set to "Extron scaler D" in the system preferences (Mac) or default playback device you can access by right clicking on the speaker icon (Windows). The volume control on Mac OS has no effect, you need to adjust volume on the media controller.

To view a laptop
There are two connections, VGA (the traditional connection) and HDMI. For VGA, connect the VGA cable located on top of the podium to the laptop VGA jack. If using sound, connect the "mini" sound plug provided to the laptop headphone jack. With the projector ON, press the "laptop VGA"  button on the MediaLink. You may need to press a function key on your laptop to enable the external monitor function (may be marked "LCD/CRT" or with a monitor icon).
For HDMI, connect the HDMI cable to your computer and press the "laptop HDMI" button on te media controller. You may or may not need to connect the "mini" cable for sound depending on how your computer is configured.

To Play & View a DVD, Videotape, or CD:
If the DVD/VCR is not already ON, first turn it on with its power button. With the projector on, press the DVD or VCR button on the Media Link. Insert your CD, DVD, or video tape into the appropriate drawer or slot. Use the controls on the right side of the MediaLink (or the JVC remote) to control playback functions. If a cable TV channel is showing, press the TV/VCR button on the MediaLink to eliminate it. You must use the MediaLink to change between DVD and VCR functions, the buttons on the remote may not work as expected. The other functions on the remote work as described in the DVD/VCR manual. Note:The small device attached to the front of the DVD/VCR is intended to be there, please do not remove it. The remote will work fine with it in place.
